Coming from a family of musicians, he began studying the mandolin at the age of eight, graduating with full marks and honors from the “C. Pollini” of Padua. He obtained, again with honors, the II Level specialization at the “S. Pietro a Majella” in Naples. He was awarded at the II International Mandolin Competition "Nino Catania" in Varazze and, as one of the best students graduated from the Conservatories of northern Italy, in the context of the XXIII musical review "The new talents", organized by the Rotary Club of Cittadella .

As a soloist he has released the albums: "Il mandolino: Autori del '700" and "Raffaele Calace: works for mandolin and piano", which include first-ever pieces that reflect Nunzio's interest in the original mandolin repertoire; “Terra di fronte” and “Opera (a) due: Inventions for accompanied mandolin”, with original works by the composers Antonello Paliotti and Pierluigi Potalivo. He is a mandolin teacher at the D.Cimarosa Conservatory in Avellino.

He is a founding member of the Motus Mandolin Quartet with whom he recorded the album “Calace – Music for Mandolin quartet”.

For years, on behalf of some of the most important Italian opera houses, he has participated in performances in which the mandolin plays a leading role, held in prestigious venues such as the Teatro S. Carlo in Naples, the Teatro dell'Opera in Rome and the Accademia di Santa Cecilia in Rome, where in 1989 he participated in the execution of the Seventh Symphony by G. Mahler under the direction of Giuseppe Sinopoli. He has also collaborated with the Venice Orchestra, the Magna Grecia Orchestra, and the Orchestra of the S. Pietro a Majella Conservatory in Naples.

In 2014 he was invited to the eleventh edition of the prestigious "Mandolines de Lunel" festival where he performed with the Montpellier National Orchestra performing in the world premiere the suite "Nei mari della luna" composed by Antonello Paliotti.

There are several collaborations of him in the theater; with Roberto De Simone, in the shows L'ammalato per apprensione (comedy-ballet by Moliere, from Neapolitan translations of the 18th century), Era di maggio: anamnesi Digiacomiana, and in Le cantatrici villane by Valentino Fioravanti. From 1987 to 1991 he performed with Lina Sastri on her Italian and foreign tours, collaborating on her various record productions. He has also collaborated, in the recording of soundtracks, with the most important pop music composers (Ennio Morricone, Armando Trovajoli, Luis Bacalov, Nicola Piovani, Riz Ortolani). Nunzio was a member of Renzo Arbore's Orchestra Italiana, with which he toured internationally performing in some of the most prestigious theaters in the world (Radio City Music Hall, Madison Square Garden and Carnegie Hall in New York, Colòn in Buenos Aires, Royal Albert Hall in London, Olympia in Paris). In 1997 he was invited by Ray Charles to perform the song 'O sole mio, later included in an album by the American artist.

Aus einer Musikerfamilie stammend, begann er im Alter von acht Jahren mit dem Studium der Mandoline und schloss das Studium an der "C. Pollini" in Padua mit voller Punktzahl und Auszeichnung ab. Er erhielt, ebenfalls mit Auszeichnung, die Spezialisierung der Stufe II an der "S. Pietro a Majella" in Neapel. Er wurde beim II. Internationalen Mandolinenwettbewerb "Nino Catania" in Varazze ausgezeichnet und als einer der besten Studenten der norditalienischen Konservatorien im Rahmen der XXIII. musikalischen Prüfung "Die neuen Talente", die vom Rotary Club von Cittadella organisiert wurde.

Als Solist hat er die Alben veröffentlicht: "Il mandolino: Autori del '700" und "Raffaele Calace: Werke für Mandoline und Klavier", die Erstlingswerke enthalten, die Nunzios Interesse am ursprünglichen Mandolinenrepertoire widerspiegeln; "Terra di fronte" und "Opera (a) due: Inventions for accompanied mandolin", mit Originalwerken der Komponisten Antonello Paliotti und Pierluigi Potalivo. Er ist Mandolinenlehrer am Konservatorium D. Cimarosa in Avellino.

Er ist Gründungsmitglied des Motus Mandolin Quartetts, mit dem er das Album "Calace - Music for Mandolin quartet" aufgenommen hat.

Seit Jahren nimmt er im Auftrag einiger der wichtigsten italienischen Opernhäuser an Aufführungen teil, in denen die Mandoline eine Hauptrolle spielt, und zwar in so renommierten Häusern wie dem Teatro S. Carlo in Neapel, dem Teatro dell'Opera in Rom und der Accademia di Santa Cecilia in Rom, wo er 1989 an der Aufführung der Siebten Symphonie von G. Mahler unter der Leitung von Giuseppe Sinopoli teilnahm. Er hat auch mit dem Orchester von Venedig, dem Orchester der Magna Grecia und dem Orchester des Konservatoriums S. Pietro a Majella in Neapel zusammengearbeitet.

Im Jahr 2014 wurde er zur elften Ausgabe des renommierten Festivals "Mandolines de Lunel" eingeladen, wo er mit dem Orchestre National de Montpellier auftrat und die von Antonello Paliotti komponierte Suite "Nei mari della luna" uraufführte.

Außerdem hat er bei der Aufnahme von Soundtracks mit den wichtigsten Komponisten der Popmusik zusammengearbeitet (Ennio Morricone, Armando Trovajoli, Luis Bacalov, Nicola Piovani, Riz Ortolani). Nunzio war Mitglied des Orchestra Italiana von Renzo Arbore, mit dem er auf internationalen Tourneen in einigen der renommiertesten Theater der Welt auftrat (Radio City Music Hall, Madison Square Garden und Carnegie Hall in New York, Colòn in Buenos Aires, Royal Albert Hall in London, Olympia in Paris). 1997 wurde er von Ray Charles eingeladen, das Lied "O sole mio" zu singen, das später auf einem Album des amerikanischen Künstlers erschien.

Festival Mandolines de Lunel

Die Aufnahme oben stammt wohl aus dem Konzert von 2006 in Rom. Davon gibt es ein Video mit dem gesamten Konzert. Renzo Arbore stellt die drei Spieler mit Mandoline und Mandola zuerst ausführlich vor. Es macht Spass den drei beim Spielen zuzusehen, besonders am Ende des Stückes wo besonders Gennaro Petrone richtig aufdreht!
