 Peter Omelchenko, until recently a member of Moscow’s renowned Osipov balalaika orchestra, is a domra/mandolin virtuoso, arranger, composer, conductor, and music teacher.
Peter spent his childhood in the south of Russia, where he was surrounded by the rich folk-music traditions of the Cossack people. Now a representative of today’s leading school of Russian folk-instrument performance, Peter studied at Moscow’s Gnessin Academy in the special class of Alexander Tsygankov, who recognized the particularly heartfelt character and distinctive timbre of Peter’s domra technique. While still a student, Peter won significant awards at many prestigious competitions, such as the “Cup of the North” in Cherepovets. Before joining the Osipov orchestra, he was a member of the Nekrasov Radio and Television Folk Instrument Orchestra, also in Moscow, and performed regularly with several other orchestras and smaller ensembles. Peter has appeared in some of Russia’s most famous venues, including the Great Hall of the Moscow Conservatory, the Tchaikovsky Concert Hall, and – as a guest artist with the Red Army Ensemble – the Bolshoi Theater.

In the United States, Peter was an artistic director, conductor, and soloist of the Washington Balalaika Society Orchestra. He performed on the Millennium Stage of Washington’s Kennedy Center, presented several solo recitals at the Lyceum Theater in Alexandria, Virginia, and regularly participated in successive national conventions of the Balalaika and Domra Association of America (BDAA) as a guest artist and teacher of domra master classes.

Nowadays, Peter performs very actively as part of the esteemed duo Musalliance and Concert à la Carte project. Peter’s broad repertoire includes Eastern European and international folk music, classical music transcriptions, popular favorites, and his own compositions.
In addition to his performance career, Peter has earned an enviable reputation as an arranger. Many orchestras and smaller groups in different countries have played his arrangements of a wide variety of music. Recently, for example, he arranged and orchestrated a Russian folk-instrument interpolation for world-famous tenor Andrea Bocelli’s new recording of “Lara’s Theme” from Doctor Zhivago, in which the Osipov orchestra participated.

A consummate entertainer, Peter has also been active in musical theater, performing on stage in a number of roles: singing, dancing, and improvising on multiple instruments, while also contributing original music and choreography. He maintains a popular YouTube channel which presents interesting and unusual videos of folk-instrument performances.

Peter verbrachte seine Kindheit im Süden Russlands, wo er von den reichen Volksmusiktraditionen der Kosaken umgeben war. Der heutige Vertreter der führenden Schule für russische Volksmusik studierte an der Moskauer Gnessin-Akademie in der Spezialklasse von Alexander Tsygankov, der den besonders herzlichen Charakter und das unverwechselbare Timbre von Peters Domra-Technik erkannte. Noch während seines Studiums gewann Peter bedeutende Preise bei vielen renommierten Wettbewerben, wie dem "Cup of the North" in Cherepovets. Bevor er in das Osipov-Orchester eintrat, war er Mitglied des Nekrasov Radio and Television Folk Instrument Orchestra, ebenfalls in Moskau, und trat regelmäßig mit mehreren anderen Orchestern und kleineren Ensembles auf. Heutzutage tritt Peter sehr aktiv als Teil des geschätzten Duos Musalliance und des Projekts Concert à la Carte auf. Peters breit gefächertes Repertoire umfasst osteuropäische und internationale Volksmusik, Transkriptionen klassischer Musik, beliebte Stücke und eigene Kompositionen.
Neben seiner Konzerttätigkeit hat sich Peter auch einen beneidenswerten Ruf als Arrangeur erworben. Viele Orchester und kleinere Gruppen in verschiedenen Ländern haben seine Bearbeitungen einer Vielzahl von Musikstücken gespielt. Kürzlich arrangierte und orchestrierte er zum Beispiel eine russische Volksmusik-Interpolation für die neue Aufnahme von Laras Thema" aus Doktor Schiwago des weltberühmten Tenors Andrea Bocelli, an der das Osipov-Orchester beteiligt war.

Als Vollblut-Entertainer ist Peter auch im Musiktheater aktiv, wo er in verschiedenen Rollen auf der Bühne steht: Er singt, tanzt und improvisiert auf mehreren Instrumenten, während er auch Originalmusik und Choreografien beisteuert. Er unterhält einen beliebten YouTube-Kanal, der interessante und ungewöhnliche Videos von Auftritten mit Volksinstrumenten präsentiert.

I grew up in a very musical family. All the members of which sang or played folk instruments or did both. My first teacher taught me to play the piano. But the lessons were boring.

So my parents did some research and found me the best available one. He taught the domra, a musical instrument very similar to the mandolin and popular in Russian and Ukraine. I was lucky to have the best teachers since childhood.

I decided to be a professional musician at the age of 14. I left my hometown at the age of 15 and studied at a music college in Krasnodar and Gnessin's Academy of Music in Moscow.

After several years of working in Moscow, I decided to move to the USA and share the beauty of Eastern European music with many people who lived there and had similar interests.

I adore the fact that Paganini played not only the violin but mandolin and guitar too.

Mandolin was the first Paganini's instrument he learned.
