Meine LehrerInnen waren ….

I am self-taught on the mandolin and I don't have a teacher on this instrument, but since I use a lot of guitar playing techniques, I would name my guitar teacher Riho Lilje from the Tallinn Music School named after Georg Ots where I studied in 1983-1988.

Since I play a lot of very different music, I chose here two pieces in different styles, in which I use my most recent playing techniques.

Da ich ganz unterschiedliche Musik spiele habe ich zwei Stücke ausgesucht in denen ich meine neuesten Spieltechniken verwende.

“Ei suutnud oodata sa mind” by Raimond Valgre arranged and played by Toomas Rannu (mandolin)

Raimond Valgre (1913–1949) was an Estonian composer and musician whose songs have become some of the most well known in Estonia.

“Ei suutnud oodata sa mind” (You couldn't wait for me) was written in 1943 and it tells of an episode of life in those days.

Being away from home, I dreamed of you, the happiness that could come again. But when I got home, I found that you cared too little about me. You couldn't wait for me. Do you still remember when you gave me a hand with tears in your eyes, telling me, "I'll be waiting for you even as the years go by”? You couldn't wait for me. Maybe you don't know when I dreamed all those nights about you, my love, when the harsh fate had separated us. Then the thought of you inspired me in all the difficult battles on the front, that when I got home I would meet you, see your smile, I was sure of it. You couldn't wait for me. And even if the day comes when I maybe will see you, happiness cannot be repeated. You couldn't wait for me.
