Die Geschichte von "Blue Mandolin" findet man bei Bandcamp im Begleittext, hier nur die ersten Abschnitte:

The ‘Blue Mandolin’ album is in many ways the sister to my ‘Blue Guitar’ album, as both projects started out as a labor of love. I am a bit of a fixture in the local blues guitar scene these days, but when I originally set about recording a ‘Blues’ in 1998 I heard plenty of ‘advice’ indicating that it was not a good ‘business’ move… I remember thinking at the time… yep, and that’s why I am a musician not a businessman!
My desire to play blues guitar after a successful career in rock music was no big surprise to anyone that knew me, but a ‘mandolin’ album of this nature may raise one or two eyebrows.

I’ve never really had many friends who played mandolin to bounce off on this journey … but some years ago I fancied the idea of a mini guitar to travel with, and maybe even use on stage… but I never found one that I liked.
One night I saw my mate Jeff Lang using a mandolin for a song in his set, I thought maybe I could find a uke tuning or something that would work for me.

At that time, it wasn’t so easy to find a mandolin, but I ended up buying a banged up ‘el cheapo’ to fool around with. It wasn’t a great player and had almost no wood tone coming through… it was all strings, but it was a start.
I messed about with a few tunings before deciding to actually tune it like a mandolin. That thing toured with me for a while and even appeared on a couple of ‘Screaming Jets’ recordings.

After I ordered my Gilchrist around ’97 I had quite a wait for it to arrive, so I found a Samick A style to mess around on, then eventually sold that and got a great Ray Black F Style with a cedar top. I did a lot of learning on the Ray Black until my Gilchrist arrived in 1999. Everyone is well aware of Steve Gilchrist’s work and the mandolin he made me is beyond my expectations.

I picked up this 1915 Gibson A- 1 at a sale in unplayable condition. Local luthier Jim Cargill brought it to life and installed a pickup. It’s the mandolin I am commonly seen playing live. It has a chunky neck and a wonderful dry sound.

Reuben Guitars is located in Cairns QLD and makes custom instruments. After seeing me play electric mandolin on stage, we got talking about a one off double neck… mandolin and guitar. This is the result! I play a Les Paul gold top, and then break out the double neck to jump between instruments.

I love the acoustic mandolin, and I wanted to use one at festivals during my electric (guitar) set, but it can be tricky to set up an acoustic instrument in that setting. I became interested in the electric mandolin so I could just plug into the amp backline and treat it like a like a guitar change to play at high volume. I know it is not for the purists, but it sure goes over great with audiences.nts.

I was playing some clubs in NYC and took a trip to Staten Island to go to the Mandolin Brothers store sometime in the early 200’s. I ended up using all my credit to buy this beat up 1923 Gibson F2. I then lived on nothing but bagels for the rest of my trip.

Ich spiele Mandoline weil ...

I’m a long time professional guitar player, but for many years loved the look and aesthetic of the mandolin, I thought it looked like a little Jazz guitar, almost like a ES175. Many years ago I saw a local player called Louis McManus play mandolin at a gig in Melbourne, I was awestruck, I’d never really heard mandolin used as the lead instrument before. It was rare to see mandolin played in Australia at the time, and it really wasn’t until I saw my buddy Jeff Lang play one years later at his solo show that I started to think I might get one. I have a rare solid body guitar built by master luthier Steve Gilchrist, and around 1997 I visited Steve at his workshop, he played me some Kentucky Thunder and Dawg while we drank coffee, it blew my mind… I could barely play mandolin at the time, but ordered an A Style from Steve.
