As a rock guitarist I was looking for a more melodic option. When I started to get interested in samba and choro I played cavaquinho for some time but the mandolin was already around. At some point I realized that this was exactly what I was looking for.

Als Rockgitarrist suchte ich nach einer melodischeren Option. Als ich anfing, mich für Samba und Choro zu interessieren, spielte ich eine Zeit lang Cavaquinho, aber die Mandoline gab es schon. Irgendwann wurde mir klar, dass das genau das war, was ich suchte.

I was mostly self-taught on the instrument but always looking for methods and guidance. Some encounters were very important like Marilynn Mair, Afonso Machado and Carlo Aonzo although I cannot have the honor to say that they were my teachers in a formal way.
In parallel, I studied guitar and graduated as a music teacher.

Ich habe mir das Instrument größtenteils selbst beigebracht, war aber immer auf der Suche nach Methoden und Anleitung. Einige Begegnungen waren sehr wichtig, wie Marilynn Mair, Afonso Machado und Carlo Aonzo, obwohl ich nicht die Ehre haben kann zu sagen, dass sie in formaler Hinsicht meine Lehrer waren.
Parallel dazu habe ich Gitarre studiert und einen Abschluss als Musiklehrer gemacht.

In Brazil we have a beautiful mandolin tradition. A mythology of its own, I would say.
The combination of this local culture with a vast classical music literature and the possibility to interact with other popular cultures (from bluegrass to Indian music) puts the instrument in a very special place.

In Brasilien haben wir eine schöne Mandolinentradition. Eine eigene Mythologie, würde ich sagen.
Die Kombination dieser lokalen Kultur mit einer umfangreichen klassischen Musikliteratur und der Möglichkeit, mit anderen Populärkulturen (von Bluegrass bis hin zu indischer Musik) zu interagieren, verleiht dem Instrument einen ganz besonderen Stellenwert.

First, my grandfather, who I spent my childhood listening to play mainly waltzes. So, when I discovered Jacob do Bandolim it was like opening a new world. And no doubt Hamilton de Holanda put the instrument back on stage for my generation.

Erstens mein Großvater, von dem ich als Kind hauptsächlich beim spielen von Walzer zuhörte. Als ich Jacob do Bandolim entdeckte, war es, als würde ich eine neue Welt eröffnen. Und zweifellos hat Hamilton de Holanda das Instrument für meine Generation wieder auf die Bühne gebracht.

Mainly by making the instrument visible. This involves musicians, teachers, luthiers, publishers, concerts... I see that we are all part of a large dissemination network.

Jacob do Bandolim said that the greatest challenge concerning the mandolin is that we need to extract a sound that is not the natural sound of the instrument. Certainly, he had in mind a detachment from the traditional technique in favor of a Brazilian language of tremolo, ornamentation, etc. Anyway, it is an instigating thought and a provocative way to look at the instrument.

Jacob do Bandolim sagte, dass die größte Herausforderung bei der Mandoline darin besteht, dass wir einen Klang extrahieren müssen, der nicht dem natürlichen Klang des Instruments entspricht. Sicherlich hatte er eine Loslösung von der traditionellen Technik zugunsten einer brasilianischen Sprache des Tremolo, der Verzierung usw. im Sinn. Auf jeden Fall ist es ein anregender Gedanke und eine provokante Art, das Instrument zu betrachten.

That's a tough one! I'm going to stick with recordings that left a strong impression on me. Vibrações, by Jacob do Bandolim in the album of the same name, Baião Malandro by Hamilton de Holanda in his debut solo album with ten-string mandolin and Avi Avital's interpretation of Bartok's Romanian folk dances.

Das ist eine schwierige Frage! Ich bleibe bei Aufnahmen, die einen starken Eindruck bei mir hinterlassen haben. In chronological order, Luperce Miranda, Jacob do Bandolim, Armandinho and Hamilton de Holanda are the ones who wrote the book of the Brazilian mandolin.

In the last few years I have been working a lot as a teacher. Besides my work at the Escola de Música de Brasília (where I teach mandolin and History of Brazilian music) I have published a method for beginners, material for solo mandolin, arrangements of Beethoven's sonatinas for mandolin with guitar accompaniment etc.
In the academic field I have published several articles and researches related to mandolin, including my master's degree on contemporary music and now (August 2023) I finished my Phd investigating the beginnings of mandolin in Brazil.

In den letzten Jahren war ich viel als Lehrer tätig. Neben meiner Arbeit an der Escola de Música de Brasília (wo ich Mandoline und Geschichte der brasilianischen Musik unterrichte) habe ich eine Methode für Anfänger, Material für Solo-Mandoline, Arrangements von Beethovens Sonatinen für Mandoline mit Gitarrenbegleitung usw. veröffentlicht.
Im akademischen Bereich habe ich mehrere Artikel und Forschungen zum Thema Mandoline veröffentlicht, darunter meine Masterarbeit über zeitgenössische Musik, und jetzt (August 2023) habe ich meine Doktorarbeit über die Anfänge der Mandoline in Brasilien abgeschlossen.
