Leopoldo Francia (1875 - 1918) studied the mandolin with his father and in Milano. He was a member of the mandolin club of Milano. At the first national competition for mandolin soloists, quartetes and orchestras in Genoa 1892 he won a gold medal.

From 1894 he lived in London and was the leading mandolin player in England.

His Virtuoso School was written in 1896, it was published by Fiammetta Waldahoff in 1912.

According to Paul Sparks this method includes the earliest examples of the so called duo style technique for the mandolin.

Francia describes 14 different playing styles for the mandolin. For each style he includes exercises and solo pieces in his method.

Er war Mitglied im Mandolin Club von Mailandund gewann schon 1892 eine Gold Medaille beim ersten Wettbewerb für Mandolinensolisten, Quartette und Orchester in Genua. Ab 1894 zog er nach London wo er als der führende Mandolinist galt.

Seine Virtuoso School for the Mandolin wurde schon 1896 geschrieben, die Schule wurde aber erst 1912 von Fiammetta Waldahoff in London veröffentlicht.

Laut Paul Sparks enthält die Schule die ersten Beispiele des songenannten Duo Style. Francia beschreibt am Anfang der Schule vierzehn verschiedene Spielweisen für die Mandoline. Für jede dieser Spielweisen folgen im Anschluss Übungen und Solo-Stücke.
