My name is Daniel Ullom and I’m a musician based out Puyallup, WA. I play mandolin in addition to guitar and bass. I mostly focus on bluegrass and old-time music, but as any musician will say, that’s not all I do.

I’ve been performing professionally for over a decade and toured all over the United States. You can check out my sound on the video and projects pages. I just released my debut solo album The Swanannoa Sessions featuring master fiddlers Tatiana Hargreaves, Rob Fong, John Duncan and Lindsay Pruett. You can check that out on my projects page.

I grew up in the Yakima Valley in central Washington state surrounded by dry foothills and apple orchards. Some of my earliest memories involve playing back-up mandolin for my dad during family sing-a-longs. At the age 11, I started taking mandolin lessons from a local musician, who introduced me to the world of fiddle tunes and folk songs. When I was 16, a neighbor discovered that I played mandolin and invited me over to my first bluegrass party. It was a potluck-style picking party, the first of many to come. The inclusive and empowering culture surrounding the music instantly hooked me, and I was soon obsessively learning about the history and tradition surrounding bluegrass and old-time music.

I moved to Seattle to attend the University of Washington, which placed me in the middle of a bustling music scene. I quickly began building a repertoire in American roots music and eventually found myself playing full-time and teaching lessons.

After a few amazing years in the Seattle scene, I decided to pack up and fly across the US to Asheville, North Carolina to join a vibrant scene surrounding a long tradition of old-time and bluegrass music. In 2021, I recorded an album with some of my favorite fiddlers and released it as The Swannanoa Sessions.

Mein Name ist Daniel Ullom und ich bin ein Musiker aus Puyallup, WA. Ich spiele neben Gitarre und Bass auch Mandoline. Ich konzentriere mich hauptsächlich auf Bluegrass und Oldtime-Musik, aber wie jeder Musiker sagen wird, ist das nicht alles, was ich mache.

Ich wuchs im Yakima Valley im Bundesstaat Washington auf, umgeben von trockenen Ausläufern und Apfelplantagen. Zu meinen frühesten Erinnerungen gehört, dass ich meinen Vater beim Familiensingen auf der Mandoline begleitete. Im Alter von 11 Jahren begann ich, Mandolinenunterricht bei einem lokalen Musiker zu nehmen, der mich in die Welt der Fiddle-Melodien und Volkslieder einführte. Als ich 16 war, entdeckte ein Nachbar, dass ich Mandoline spielte, und lud mich zu meiner ersten Bluegrass-Party ein. Es war eine "Potluck"-Picking-Party, die erste von vielen, die noch folgen sollten. Die integrative und ermutigende Kultur, die diese Musik umgibt, hat mich sofort in ihren Bann gezogen, und schon bald war ich besessen davon, mehr über die Geschichte und die Traditionen von Bluegrass und Oldtime-Musik zu erfahren.

Ich zog nach Seattle, um an der University of Washington zu studieren, und befand mich damit inmitten einer lebhaften Musikszene. Schnell baute ich mir ein Repertoire an amerikanischer Roots-Musik auf und fand mich schließlich in der Lage, Vollzeit zu spielen und Unterricht zu geben.

Nach einigen erstaunlichen Jahren in der Szene von Seattle beschloss ich, meine Sachen zu packen und quer durch die USA nach Asheville, North Carolina, zu fliegen, um mich einer lebendigen Szene anzuschließen, die auf eine lange Tradition von Oldtime- und Bluegrass-Musik zurückblicken kann.
